Abbreviations and Acronyms:

GHG: greenhouse gases. 

IPCC: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (acronym) 

IMN: National Meteorological Institute of Costa Rica. 

Concepts and Definitions: 

Base year: historical period specified for purposes of comparing GHG emissions or removals of GHG or other related information of the GHG in a period of time. 

Note: the emissions or removals of the base year can be quantified based on a specific period (eg .: one year) or can be averaged from several periods (eg .: several years). 

Increase of GHG removals: calculated increase GHG removals between a baseline scenario and the management plan. 

Client: organization or person that request the validation or verification. Note: could be the responsible part, or the GHG program administrator, or other involved part. 

C-Neutrality: is achieved when through a transparent process of the measuring of the emissions (e) the result of the net calculation of emissions minus emission reductions and / or removal enhancements (r), less compensation ( c) it is zero. It is expressed as: e (i-1) - r (i) - c (i) = 0 Where i is the year or period of inventory. 

Activity data of the GHG: quantitative measure of the activity that produces GHG emission or removal. Examples: quantity of energy, fuel or electricity consumed, material produced, service provided or areas of land affected. 

GHG emissions: total mass of GHG released into the atmosphere over a given period. 

Direct emissions: GHG emissions coming from GHG sources owned or controlled by the organization. 

Indirect emissions: GHG emissions resulting from the activities of the organization, but that originate from GHG sources owned or controlled by other organizations. 

Emission or removal factor of GHG: factor that relates the activity data to the emissions or removals of GHG. 

GHG sources: physical unit or process that releases GHG into the atmosphere. 

GHG: greenhouse gases set by the Kyoto Protocol, which include: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N20), hidroflourocarbonos (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and hexafluoride sulfur (SF6 ). 

Uncertainty: parameter associated with the result of quantification, that characterizes the dispersion of the values that could reasonably be attributed to the quantified amount. 

Note: The information on uncertainty generally specified quantitative estimates of the probably dispersion of the values, and a qualitative description of the causes of the dispersion. 

GHG Report: independent document intended to communicate information related to GHG of an organization to its intended user. A report may include a statement on GHG. 

GHG Inventory: sources, sinks, GHG emissions and removals of an organization. 

Mitigation Measures: actions that reduces GHG Emissions or Increase sinks and capture forms. 

Adaptation measures: actions that involves preparing for the consequences of variations in the climate. It involves knowing the current transformations, as well as the expected. 

Source of greenhouse gases: physical unit or process that releases a GHG into the atmosphere. Sink of greenhouse gases: physical unit or process that removes a greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. 

Organization: company, corporation, firm, enterprise, authority, institution, or part or combination thereof, incorporated or not, public or private, that has its own functions and administration. 

Responsible part: person or persons responsible for providing the GHG assertion and the support information on GHGs. 

Global Warning Potential: factor that describes the impact of the radiation strength of a unit based on the mass of a given GHG, in relation to the equivalent unit of carbon dioxide in a given period. 

GHG removals: total mass of a GHG removed from the atmosphere over a given period. 

GHG emissions reduction:reduction of GHG emissions calculated between a baseline scenario and the management plan. 

GHG information system: policies, processes and procedures to establish, manage and maintain GHG information. 

GHG sink: physical unit or process and/or chemical that removes greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. 

Intended user: individual or organization identified by those who report related to GHG and who uses such information for decision-making. 

Note: The intended user can be the client, responsible party, the GHG program administrators, regulatory agencies, the financial community or other affected stakeholders such as local communities, government departments or non-governmental organizations. 

Vulnerability: level of susceptibility or the inability of a system to address the adverse effects of climate change and in particular climate variability and extreme events. The vulnerability will depend on the nature, magnitude and rate of climate change to which a system is exposed, and its sensitivity and adaptive capacity.
